One of the most common enquiries that we receive at Luxe & Humble is from people who have chairs that require new upholstery. Many know nothing about what is involved in the reupholstery process or what costs to expect.
So what exactly is upholstery?
Wikipedia defines upholstery as 'the work of providing furniture, especially seats, with padding, springs, webbing, and fabric or leather covers.'
When most of our clients reach out, they are simply referring to requiring a new fabric cover for their chair, but in the majority of our upholstery jobs (unless otherwise stated on your quote), we will be completely stripping your chair back to it's bare frame and replacing it's padding, springs & webbing.
What costs are associated with upholstery?
In their most basic form, the costs are labour and materials.
Upholstery is a specialised skillset and so you are paying for a professional to ensure that the seat of your chair is correctly structured for comfort & support and that the fabric on the outside is applied to the chair in a way that is aesthetically pleasing.
The labour quoted will generally include completely stripping your chair back to its bare bones and replacing/reassembling all of the upholstery components.
The materials are made up of the internal upholstery components (such as the springs, webbing and padding) and lastly, the external fabric. When we quote upholstery work at Luxe & Humble we will give you an upholstery labour and materials quote (which include all labour and springs, webbing & padding) as this price will be consistent irrespective as to which fabric/leather you choose to cover your chair in.
To receive a quote for the upholstery labour & material component of piece, please email us front, back and side photos of the piece (if the cushion/s are removable, please supply a photo with and without cushions). We will then work with you to help you to choose which fabric that you would like to cover your piece in.
How does the fabric selection process work?
There are several ways that this process works.
On occasion, customers will come to us with a photo or the name of the fabric they want and, apart from sourcing the fabric, we have very little to do with the fabric selection process.
More commonly we have a customers who come to us wanting to achieve an overall aesthetic for a space. They will supply us with inspiration photos of the look/feel they want and we will supply samples of fabrics that we think could help them to achieve this that are suitable for the way they intend to use their chairs. I.e. (Indoor/Outdoor fabrics for transitional rooms, hardy wear & stain resistant fabrics for houses with young children etc).
Occasionally, we will have a customer come to us who has a chair but they really have no idea what they want to do with it. In this instance we will often ask for pictures of their home, particularly the space the chair/s will inhabit and learn more about how they use the space. From here, we will provide fabrics that are cohesive with the space, but different in look and feel in order to narrow down exactly what the customer wants.
So I have chosen my fabric & accepted my quote, now what?
The next step is to pay your deposit, generally the most expensive component is fabric (ranging between $100 and $500 per meter), your deposit is generally the greater of the cost of your fabric or 50% of the total.
As soon as your deposit is paid, your fabric will be ordered, depending on the fabric that you choose, it may take between 1 & 6 weeks to arrive.
Once we have a clear ETA for your fabric, the chair will be scheduled with our upholsterers. Depending on the time of the year, this can range from between 4 weeks and 3 months, and we will ask you to arrange delivery of your items to be upholstered to us in Gowrie Junction.
We will keep you abreast of the progress of your job throughout, confirming each milestone (fabric ordered, fabric ETA, fabric arrival, upholstery expected start date, date to drop furniture in, progress of upholstery and upholstery completion date).
Arranging pick up/delivery of finished goods
Once the upholstery of your chairs has been completed, we will confirm the balance of your quote that it outstanding. This will need to be paid prior to your chairs being picked up or shipped.
If you do not have the means to move your pieces yourself we are able to provide the details of removalists who may be able to assist you with transporting your goods to and from us.
The last step in the process
The last step in the whole process if for you to enjoy your freshly upholstered pieces. They should be more comfortable and beautiful than ever before. Our favourite part of the whole upholstery process is receiving a photo of you enjoying your chair in situ!
If you have any further questions about the upholstery process or you have a piece that you would like quoted, please reach out to us via email with front, back and side photos of the piece (if the cushion/s are removable, please supply a photo with and without cushions).
