Fuel Powered Sad Iron
Fuel Powered Sad Iron
Fuel-powered irons were invented to solve the problems associated with traditional coal irons. Coal irons required coals to be constantly heated, removed, and replaced from the iron, and the subsequent coal dust and soot from the fires would make the garments being ironed dirty.
Fuel-powered irons date to the turn of the 20th century, but we are unable to provide an accurate date for this old gal. We suspect that she likely dates to the first quarter of the 1900s - irrespective of when she was manufactured she is a beauty.
Style her as a paperweight in your office, a decorative piece in the lounge, a bookend on a bookcase, or as an ode to years gone by and the toil that our Grandmothers went to keep their families looking presentable, by placing her on display in your laundry.
Still wondering about her 'sad' name. In middle English, "sad" meant "solid" and by golly she is a solid iron.
